Of the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Sinking of the RMS Titanic\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sinking_of_the_RMS_Titanic#Casualties_and_survivors\">estimated 2,224 passengers and crew<\/a> aboard, more than 1,500 died, which made the sinking one of the <a title=\"List of maritime disasters\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_maritime_disasters\">deadliest for a single ship<\/a> up to that time.<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Titanic#cite_note-4\">[a]<\/a><\/sup> It remains the deadliest peacetime sinking of a <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Superliner (passenger ship)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Superliner_(passenger_ship)\">superliner<\/a> or <a title=\"Cruise ship\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cruise_ship\">cruise ship<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-5\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Titanic#cite_note-5\">[4]<\/a><\/sup> The disaster drew public attention, provided foundational material for the <a title=\"Disaster film\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Disaster_film\">disaster film<\/a> genre, and has inspired many artistic works.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Royal Mail Ship\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Royal_Mail_Ship\">RMS<\/a> <i>Titanic<\/i> was the <a title=\"Timeline of largest passenger ships\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Timeline_of_largest_passenger_ships\">largest ship afloat<\/a> at the time she entered service and the second of three<a title=\"Olympic-class ocean liner\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Olympic-class_ocean_liner\"><i> Olympic<\/i>-class ocean liners<\/a> operated by the White Star Line. She was built by the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Harland and Wolff\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harland_and_Wolff\">Harland and Wolff<\/a> shipyard in <a title=\"Belfast\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Belfast\">Belfast<\/a>. <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Thomas Andrews (shipbuilder)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Andrews_(shipbuilder)\">Thomas Andrews<\/a>, the chief naval architect of the shipyard, died in the disaster.<sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Titanic#cite_note-6\">[5]<\/a><\/sup> <i>Titanic<\/i> was under the command of Captain <a title=\"Edward Smith (sea captain)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edward_Smith_(sea_captain)\">Edward Smith<\/a>,<sup id=\"cite_ref-7\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Titanic#cite_note-7\">[6]<\/a><\/sup> who <a title=\"The captain goes down with the ship\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_captain_goes_down_with_the_ship\">went down with the ship<\/a>. The ocean liner carried some of the wealthiest people in the world, as well as hundreds of emigrants from <a title=\"United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Kingdom_of_Great_Britain_and_Ireland\">Great Britain and Ireland<\/a>, <a title=\"Scandinavia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scandinavia\">Scandinavia<\/a>, and elsewhere throughout Europe, who were seeking a new life in the United States and Canada.<\/p>\n<p>The first-class accommodation was designed to be the pinnacle of comfort and luxury, with a gymnasium, swimming pool, libraries, high-class restaurants, and opulent cabins. A high-powered <a title=\"Wireless telegraphy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wireless_telegraphy\">radiotelegraph transmitter<\/a> was available for sending passenger &#8220;marconigrams&#8221; and for the ship&#8217;s operational use.<sup id=\"cite_ref-auto_8-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Titanic#cite_note-auto-8\">[7]<\/a><\/sup> The <i>Titanic<\/i> had advanced safety features, such as watertight compartments and remotely activated watertight doors, contributing to its reputation as &#8220;unsinkable&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Die Titanic geh\u00f6rt wegen der Umst\u00e4nde, die mit ihrem Untergang verbunden werden, zu den bekanntesten Schiffen der Geschichte.
